It is a good school but not to work cleaning.
I'm posting as a former prof. The great majority of the professors there are highly qualified, dedicated, but poorly-paid adjuncts. (I'm giving it a low rating partly because of the piss-poor pay.) I liked the place (the diversity, the challenges) but I just couldn't afford to keep working there.
The caliber of the students varies wildly from year to year, dept. to dept. 1/3 of the students are what we'd normally consider "college material." Another 1/3 struggle, fail, get back up and keep going, w/ a ton of help and tough love from faculty and support staff (though they have to be willing to get and make use of that help) . The last 1/3 should not be in college at all -- they're not ready, interested, or willing to do the work., and are often very bad behavioral problems. The administration has been cracking down, but they HAVE to find better ways of weeding out the trouble-makers. Beyond that, the Buff State experience will be what you make of it.
This is thankfully my daughter's last year. Apparently we picked the wrong college. She complains all the time how her professors never respond to her inquires, can't be found and just don't care. I get it, they consider them adults at 18 but lets be real, they are still children who need a little guidance. She almost failed a class because English was not the professors first language and couldn't understand him. When asked to repeat himself, he'd get upset. The school is building more classrooms instead of dorms, knowing dam well most of the kids are from outside of the 35 miles needed to have on-campus housing. Her first year she had to share her room with 2 roommates instead of 1 which caused much ciaos. the next 2 years she was wait listed and stressed because she didn't know if she had a place to stay and this year we signed up for Campus Walk because she was told there was limited room for senior housing this year!! HOW?? Now I'm stuck with a lease for 12 mths even though she will be in school for 10 with no intention of staying in Buffalo. I feel Campus Walk took advantage, knowing they don't get their refunds until October. I was told they would work with the students and wait for the refunds but that didn't happen. They are charging them rent for August and not allowing them to move in till Aug 23. The construction isn't finished yet. They charge a $35 late fee and $5 everyday after. I'm sorry but they know these kids don't read so they tell them what they want to hear, not realizing they are stuck. They have students answering the phones and giving out incorrect information. I could go on and on. I was hoping for more diversity on campus but it's not what I expected. We come from the city and most of the kids are from the city. Had I know all this, we would not be here.
This school is great. I go here for the combined program of Early Childhood and Childhood Education. The professors in the Education program are passionate with what they do and are always willing to help you out. I know my professors on a one on one basis and even had the pleasure of going to a professor's house to eat dinner with her, other education professors, and fellow students in the Dean's Honors Program. I am in the Elementary Education Club and it is a great resume builder and a GREAT way to to get in touch with the education professors and seniors. They have given me so much advice and helped me out greatly in picking out classes. Every now and then they bring dogs into the Student Union to help with stress. My grades are awesome. If I am struggling, the professors are more than willing to help with office hours. Greek life is huge here. I am planning on joining a sorority once I get a GPA (I am a first semester freshman currently and it is is an honors sorority). There is no hazing with the Greek organization I am trying to get in to. I am also planning on joining the elementary education honor society as well! I love it here! DO NOT believe what people tell you about Buff State. The only people that say negative things about it are the ones that HAVE NOT attended this school and do not know what they are talking about. I am paying way less for my degree than my friends that chose to go the private route. Same degree but I am walking away with no debt. They didn't want to go to Buff State because of what they heard. I did not believe it and wanted to try it for myself. Best decision. Don't pay $20,000 a year for the same degree when you can go to Buff State and have an amazing 4 years.
I graduated from Buff State in 2005 and had a very positive experience here. Besides the infamous parking, which is the worst you can say about it, the classes for the most part were challenging but not impossible, a very good staff of professors (thanks again, after all these years, Dr. Ron Stewart) and a sociology degree that helped land me my career job within one year. A good, affordable 4-year college that I would recommend.
