rude hipster clerk...he wore edgy flannel shirt, black scarf and skinny jeans...rude as can be. overpriced books, poor selection
wonderful selection. helpful staff. a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. this is the cleanest, best maintained and organized used book store I've ever been to.
Very nice atmosphere, friendly staff, some genres have a much wider selection than others. Quaint place definitely worth a visit.
If I have one major criticism of the store, it's this: OVER PRICED. Don't get me wrong, there are some incredible deals to be had if you look, and if you talk to employees, they are very flexible on a lot of their prices. The owner however, though incredibly knowledgeable about his material, can be.....let's say abrasive, crotchety, at times flat-out rude? But he's not around much. For the most part the only person you will see is the guy at the front desk, who is always really pleasant, but is apparently responsible for almost everything around the store because he is usually too busy running around, answering phones, and appraising books to spend long periods of time helping customers, and his frustration when he calls other employees for assistance is apparent.
In response to the previous review: if you go to a bookstore looking for a warm fuzzy, you're probably an idiot. If you go to a local business and you're offended their employees are hard at work, you are DEFINITELY an idiot.
So in short: AMAZING collection, occasionally overpriced, but they can be worked with, just try to negotiate with the guy at the counter, because their owner has a short fuse.
Great place to check out, and I'd assume even better if you're looking for a special book!
I'm not really into physical books or bookshops but stumbled in with a friend after having lunch at Big Ditch. This place was quite remarkable! It was a huge multi-level store with a wide variety of any and every genre of books.
The store is massive: 2 floors, plus a collector's room, plus a rare-book room, and every inch is covered in unique items, so needless to say, this is definitely a browser's bookstore: don't go in looking for particular items. Walk around, take it in, and let items find you, because chances are you'll find things you had no idea existed. Art work, old and recent magazines, old lit magazines (very hard to come by, in my experience), first editions, antiquarian treasures, decorative bindings, letters: if it's made out of paper, they probably have it. Really amazing collection, and they have stuff ranging from $1 right up to $100,000. The first floor is where the casual reader will have the best luck. Collectors will want to head right up to the second floor.
They even have a special "collectors" room which requires special permission and a chaperone to enter.
However, what intrigued me more than the rows upon rows of books was the selection of antique maps that they had for sale- it was remarkable.
